Ronald Lawrence Haag
Waukee (formerly of Des Moines)

Ronald Haag of Waukee passed away at home in his sleep Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, after gracefully battling a neurological disorder for more than 20 years.

Ron was born May 17, 1939, to Lawrence and Lillian Haag. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1957. In April 1966, he married his next-door neighbor Shirley Patterson Durey. They had two daughters Beth and Debbie. He lived within 3 miles of his Beaverdale childhood home until 2010 when he moved to Waukee.

Ron earned an accounting degree from Drake University in June 1963, and he became a certified public accountant in February 1968. Meticulous with numbers, he worked for 30 years for the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in June 1998. He also served in the Army Reserve from 1962-68.

Ron was a longtime member of Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder and financial secretary. He volunteered as treasurer for many different organizations, including Greater Des Moines Girls Softball.

Ron brought out the best in people with his positive attitude, humor and determination, especially while fighting his physical challenges. He loved spending time with his family, traveling, listening to music, cars, following the stock market and a good laugh.

A die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, Ron was named 2006 Iowa Cubs Fan of the Year. He also cheered for Iowa State and Drake.

Ron will be greatly missed by his wife Shirley; daughters Beth Haag and Debbie (Joe) White; grandchildren Joey, Addie and Alex White; sister Marilyn DouBrava; sister-in-law Marilyn Noyes; nieces Sue Hair and Laurie (Tim) Bennett; nephews Ron (Lynette) Noyes, Jim Noyes and Mark (Melanie) DouBrava and other friends and family members. He also loved his two granddogs Lilly and Stetson.

Funeral services will be held at Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church, 4601 Douglas Ave. The family will greet friends and family Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, from 3-5 p.m. at Westover Chapel. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Memorials may be given to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, YMCA of Greater Des Moines or Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church.
