Uby was born in Des Moines, graduated from North High School and enrolled at the University of Iowa that same year. He was then inducted into the U.S. Army to fight in the 8th Infantry Division during World War II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a reconnaissance scout and saw continuous combat until meeting up with the Russian Army. He was proud of the fact that his unit helped liberate Wobbelin Concentration Camp.

After the service he returned to Des Moines and graduated from Drake University in 1949. He married the former Rosita Berdowsky of Monterrey, Mexico in 1947 and went to work for the family business, Iowa Glove & Notions. In the 1970's he owned and operated Mid-America Homes and then worked for Principal Financial for the past 20 years.

Uby was very actively involved in community organizations. He was an active member for more than 50 years of Beth El Jacob Synagogue where he served as president. He was also active with the Jewish Federation, the Bureau of Jewish Education, the Home Builders Association, the Jewish War Veterans, B'nai B'rith and Principal Financial Group's Premier Club.

Uby loved his family, his community and his synagogue. He was also an avid Hawkeye fan, an ardent fisherman, enjoyed travel, the arts, music, dancing, reading, and the Marx Brothers.
