Russell Howell, 83, passed away Friday, September 15, 2006 at Hospice Kavanaugh House. Visitation will be held Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Glendale Cemetery.

Russell was born May 15, 1923 to Russell and Golda Howell in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from Drake University Pharmacy School in 1948. Russell married Jean Leonard Lane in 1979. He was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. Russell was employed by Walgreen's for 40 years until retirement. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Van Meter, Iowa.

Russell was a kind and loving man who loved his family, friends, the outdoors, bluebirds, Mountain Dew, peanut butter, cheeseburgers, cinnamon rolls with peanut butter and jelly, jigsaw puzzles and video poker.

Russell is survived by Jean, his wife of 27 years; two sons, Steve Howell (Donna) of the Marshall Islands, and Gregg Howell (Shirley Burgess) of Des Moines; a daughter, Char Oldt (Ron) of West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Chris Oldt of West Des Moines, Joe Oldt of Newport Beach, California, Carrie Wilson of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, and Mark Howell of Chicago, Illinois; three great- grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Marshall of San Dimo, California; also, step-children, Rick Lane (Annette) of Puerto Rico, Jim Lane of Newton, Iowa, and Diane Baldwin (Bruce) of Mingo, Iowa; sevenstep-grandchildren, Rick Lane, Amy Lane, Heather Hull, Rex Robinson, Jesse Lane, Joshua Lane, and Jacob Lane; and nine step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be given in his memory to Trinity Lutheran Church of Van Meter, Iowa.
