Ruthanne was born on August 22, 1934 in Des Moines, IA. She graduated from North High School in 1952, and in 1954, she earned an associates degree in accounting from the American Institute of Business, where she met her future husband, Don. Ruthanne and Don were married on November 16, 1957. They had been married for over thirty years at the time of Don's passing in June of 1988.

Prior to her marriage, Ruthanne was employed as a bookkeeper for the Borman Company. Following the birth of her children, she became a stay at home mom. During those years, Ruthanne was a Girl Scout Leader and a Sunday school teacher at Redeemer Lutheran Church. She later went to work as a sales clerk at Sears Department Store where she was employed for over twenty years. She often won awards for being the top seller of maintenance agreements. In her retirement, Ruthanne continued her work with children by volunteering for the Literacy Army at Hillis Elementary, where two of her grandchildren attend school. Ruthanne also enjoyed traveling, gardening, her grandkids and animals. Ruthanne was a very warm and giving person who will be greatly missed by her many friends and family.

Ruthanne was preceded in death by her parents Luke Henry (Pete) and Thelma Ruth Bodensteiner; her husband Donald Dean Bockelman; brother Robert William 'Billy' Bodensteiner; and her beloved dog Misty.
