Obituary

Sam "Shim" Cohen, 83, of West Des Moines died at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Friday, October 19, 2007 following a short, courageous battle with cancer. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today, Sunday, October 21 at Mount Sinai Cemetery in Omaha.

Shim was born in Omaha and moved to Des Moines 28 years ago. He worked as a freelance writer in advertising through his own company, Creative Services of Sam Cohen. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was a member of Temple B'nai Jeshurun. He enjoyed writing, reading and crossword puzzles. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Sam is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rose Cohen of West Des Moines; two daughters, Jeannie (Rick) Gilinsky of Omaha and Cindy Cohen (Mike Milkovich) of Minnetonka, MN; two sons, Marc (Kathleen) Cohen of Topeka and Steve (Judy) Cohen of Chicago; three granddaughters, Sari Gilinsky, Sarah Cohen and Sonja Milkovich; seven grandsons, Eryk, Corey, Devon and Cameron Gilinsky, Patrick, Jason and Seth Cohen, and Micah Berger; and one brother, Haskell Cohen of Amherst, MA.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Temple B'nai Jeshurun.
