Sam I. Merkley, 87, died Monday, March 17, 2008 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines. Sam was born July 1, 1920 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was raised by his father and paternal grandparents near Drake University in Des Moines and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939.
At an early age, Sam met Dorothy Jackson, whose grandparents were neighbors. Sam and Dorothy were married May 18, 1942 in Tampa, Florida. During World War II, Sam was with the Army Signal Corp. in the South Pacific. He was awarded The Bronze Star for his service as a Corporal.
Sam and Dorothy had three sons: Gary (Altoona), Robert and his wife Ann (Des Moines) and John (deceased). Their later years were spent in Waukee and Apache Junction, Arizona, before moving to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. Sam retired from Des Moines General Hospital in 1982, where he worked as a maintenance engineer.
Sam was a member of First Christian Church, Elks Lodge 98, Izaac Walton League, American Legion and the VFW. Sam was known for his sense of humor and playfulness. He was extremely proud of his family.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; his two sons; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
