Obituary

Sarah Louise Homeier Shostrom died November 15, 2007, at Iowa Methodist Hospital.

Sarah was born January 15, 1923, in Des Moines, to John and Luvina Iowa (McGilvrey) Homeier. She graduated from Dayton (IA) High School in 1941 and attended Ft. Dodge Jr. College and the University of Iowa. Sarah married Earl Shostrom, also of Dayton, on November 19, 1944. The Shostroms moved to Des Moines in 1947 and to Urbandale in 1968.

Sarah taught rural school in the Dayton and Winterset areas and at Olin Community Schools, and was then employed at Iowa Farm Bureau until the arrival of children Karen and Keith. At that time she became a homemaker and community volunteer. She was active in La Sertoma, Camp Fire Girls, P.T.A., and served many years as historian for Aldersgate United Methodist Church. The Shostroms were regular attendees at Urbandale, University of Iowa, and Drake activities. They were season ticket holders for over 50 years at the Des Moines Community Playhouse.

Sarah is survived by Earl, her husband of 63 years; her sister, Mary Homeier of Newton; daughter Karen and son-in-law, Mark Lehmann, of Waverly; son Keith of Overland Park, KS; sister-in-law Lois Kerr of Des Moines; and grandsons Erik and Kirk Lehmann.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Urbandale on Monday, November 19, at 11 a.m. Friends may visit beginning at 9:30 a.m. A private burial service will be held in Dayton, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
