Sean Barrettsmith passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at his home in Des Moines. He was born on June 9, 1943 in Chicago. Sean attended grade school at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel on Belmont Avenue and St. George High School in Evanston, IL for three years. He then moved to Des Moines, IA in May of 1960 and graduated from Dowling High School in 1961. After high school, Sean attended Drake University before relocating to Redondo Beach, CA in 1962 and there attended El Camino College. Sean then moved to Odessa, TX where he then enlisted in the US Air Force in Oct. 1963. He was honorably discharged in Oct. 1967. After his discharge from the service, Sean moved back to Des Moines and took a job with Iowa Power & Light Company. Sean was transferred to Davenport, IA in 1995 after the Mid American Energy merger and worked there until his retirement on May 1 2003. Sean never looked back, and had no regrets while enjoying the flexibility of an early retirement.

Sean enjoyed baseball and bowling during his younger years. He took up fishing & duplicate bridge during his middle years. After retirement, Sean became a member of the local computer club, serving as treasurer for two of those years. He also was a standardized patient at Des Moines University for several years. Sean became involved and was fascinated with the hobby of genealogy. After participating in a DNA program, he was able to trace his heritage to several famous historical people.

Sean was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Helen (Straten) Barrettsmith, and siblings, Thomas, Howard, Straten and Moira. He was never married.

Even though Sean was a member of St. Anthony's Church, he actively participated in Christ the King's Adoration Program as a substitute.

“Now that my time on earth has come to an end, I want to thank GOD for putting me here at this time of earth’s history. I also want to thank all my family and friends for their support and contributions to my well being during my lifetime."
