Obituary

Mr. Serge H. Garrison, 67, died of cancer Monday, January 31, 2005 at Taylor House. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 4 at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.

Serge was born in Minot, ND on February 2, 1937. He graduated from the University of North Dakota Law School in 1962 after completing his undergraduate studies at Columbia University and the University of Minnesota. He retired in December, 2004 from the Ahler's Law Firm where he was an attorney, specializing in government relations. From 1967 to 1984 he was Director of the Iowa Legislative Service Bureau, formerly known as the Legislative Research Bureau. At the time of his hiring he was the youngest person in the country to serve in such a position in state government. He was also the Code Editor for the State of Iowa during the same time period. From 1962 to 1967 he was employed by the North Dakota Legislative Council. He was a member of the Iowa and Polk County Bar Associations; the Polk County Des Moines Consolidation Commission; National Conference of State Legislators Executive Committee from 1979-1983; Staff Chairman of Legislative Management Committee of National Conference of State Legislators. He also served as Executive Director of the Iowa Life and Health Insurance Association from 1985 to 2001. In addition he served as past President, Umpire, and Coach for Windsor Des Moines Little League; Umpire and Coach for the American Softball Association and the YMCA Girls BasketballLeague. He was a member of Windsor Heights Lutheran Church and the West Des Moines Elks Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren, golf, skiing, fishing, sports and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by his wife, Caryl Garrison of Des Moines; daughter, Kristanne Garrison and her husband, Robert McCartney of Davenport; daughters, Susan Garrison and Julie Garrison of Des Moines; and son, William Garrison, his wife, Cristy Blake and children, Lauren and Jacob Garrison all of Minneapolis, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Mahlon William Garrison and Judith (Hall) Garrison.

Family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 3 at Dunn's Funeral Home.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, InTrust Hospice, or the American Cancer Society.
