Obituary

Sharaine Markay Conner Weathers was born on September 19, 1988, in Columbus, Nebraska. Her spirit was released to the Heavens on September 17, 2025, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, literally, surrounded by her family and closest friends. That room was filled with so much love and unexplainable aura. It had to be mesmerizing for the CCU/ICU hospital staff to witness.

Sharaine was raised to believe that Jesus Christ was her Lord and Savior. She attended Maple Street Baptist Church and sang in the children’s choir. She was baptized in November of 2014, attending services and participating in online worship and Biblical Empowerment at Elpis Christian Fellowship under the direction of her aunt, Bishop Tammy L. Harris.

Married on August 12, 2022, Sharaine wed Anthony Webster in a small ceremony at the Des Moines Art Center (where she often worked while going to school) with both immediate families present. Sharaine grew up attending Des Moines Public Schools, graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 2007. She participated in many musical programs and was a marching band Drum Major. It is believed that Sharaine was the first African American Drum Major in the school’s history, second in the state of Iowa. Sharaine graduated with many honors and several scholarships including the Superintendents Award for Band.

While attending the University of Iowa through the Iowa Talent Program (ITP) she continued participation with the Hawkeye Marching Band, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW) with concentration in Education in 2012. Sharaine received her Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from the University of New England (Biddeford, Maine) in 2015.

Serenity Counseling LLC was her brain child. She continued to provide mental health and substance abuse support and services to individuals, couples, and families from her own practice. Sharaine was an Adjunct Instructor teaching at Grandview University, Simpson College, and the University of Iowa. She most recently became a Clinical Assistant Professor at the U of I.

Sharaine had a background in dual diagnosis treatment, substance abuse in the correctional system, human sexuality and sexual health, individual and group therapy, and crisis counseling. Her own areas of interest included: human sexuality issues and their relation to substance abuse, brain development and lifespan attachment issues, trauma and abuse, LGBTQIA+ issues, music and art therapy, online/ distance therapy and treatment, and healthy relationships between families and couples. She has also researched and developed several evidenced-based curriculums and had goals of one day being professionally published. Sharaine held positions in health clinics, substance abuse facilities, correctional facilities, and other community and agency settings working with both adolescents and adults.

Sharaine recently shared a copy of her first academic publication in an official peer reviewed journal. It is titled Journal of Black Sexuality and Relationships, Editor James C. Easley, PHD. 2025. And within that, Sharaine’s piece is Letter to the Editor: Focusing on Sex, Health, and Well was for Black and Brown Communities in Overlooked Spaces-An Opportunity for Change. She had also written several articles for Black Iowa News, including the center spread that featured Bishop Tammy L. Harris’ 2025 Consecration.

Sharaine earned her LISW (Licensed Social Worker) and IADC (International Alcohol and Drug Counselor) distinctions and is a member of the National Association of Social Workers, a member of the Iowa Board of Certification Committee, and IT for the Iowa Club of Des Moines. Her grandfather, Norman L. Weathers Sr. was a founding member of the of the Iowa Club social nonprofit organization, which she intended on bringing her generation to the table. Sharaine did all of the behind the scenes work on the very successful 40th Anniversary weekend in August 2025.

Outside of work, when Sharaine was not spending time with her loved ones and pets, she enjoyed movies, reading, cooking, painting, writing short stories, and playing video games.

When heaven received this angel, Sharaine joined her grandparents Norman Sr. and Sharon Weathers. What a time that had to be. Those three were tied at the hip from the second Sharaine was born.

Gone much too soon, Sharaine is mourned by her spouse, Anthony Webster of 13 years (married three); parents, Sheri and Troy Floyd; sister, Savanna (Mason) Cooper; brother, Salaam/Buddy (Alyssah Hoyle) Chism; uncle, Norman Weathers Jr.; niece Zayla; and nephews Zavoni and Zakari; sisters Tiera and Niah; niece Jazlin; in-laws: John, Lisa, Nico, Summer, Xian, Zackery; and extended family friends: Tobi Simmons, Sandee Garding, Alyson and Mia Rasmussen, Brian Ellis; and other family, friends, and colleagues.
