Obituary

Shirley A. Hansen, 92, passed from this life on Friday, November 22, 2013, in the family home in which she grew up in and surrounded by family. In agreement with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. The family will greet friends at a memorial gathering remembering Shirley's life from 1 to 3 p.m., on Saturday, November 30, at the home located at 675 – 44th Street in Des Moines. A private committal service will take place at a later date.

Shirley was born on February 26, 1921 in Chicago, IL, the fourth of six children born to Paul and Jennie (Vernon) Baichly. After courting during high school at Roosevelt, she married Richard Spencer "Dick" Hansen in 1942. After a brief employment in the insurance industry while Dick was in the United States Air Corps, they started a family and Shirley stayed home to raise their four children. During that time, she was also very active in Junior League, liked bowling, golfing, fishing in the beautiful northern lakes on family vacations and became an expert at the game of cribbage. Shirley had a great sense of style and for many years loved working at one of the most popular boutiques in Des Moines, Dickinson's. Shirley was an energetic, loving and wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

She is survived by her four children, Ann (James) Marinakis of Boca Raton, FL, Linda (Robert) Lowe of Greensboro, GA and Martha VanHouweling and Richard "Spencer" Hansen, Jr., both of Des Moines; one sister, Virginia McLaughlin of Medina, OH; and six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded into eternal life by her parents; four sisters; one brother; and her husband of 67 years, Dick Hansen in 2009.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be directed to Iowa Hospice, 5650 N.W. Johnston Drive, Suite E; Johnston, IA 50131.

ARRANGEMENTS BY ILES WESTOVER CHAPEL.
