Obituary

Shirley Wittenstein, 90, died Monday, April 14, 2014 at Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center. Funeral services will be 4:00 pm, Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Temple B'nai Jeshurun. Burial will follow at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.

Shirley was born February 25, 1924 in Kansas City, MO to Harry and Jeannette (Markowitz) Herowitz. She was a graduate of Indiana University and lived in many cities before her marriage to Harlan Wittenstein in 1951. She worked at the Westport Library in Kansas City, worked in retail at Macy's in Kansas City, had been a French language tutor, and worked for Meredith Publishing Company. Shirley won poetry awards and had one of her poems published. She loved to dance, gave dancing lessons and sang in many choirs. She was also an active volunteer with the Temple, Franklin Library, Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center, Charter Community Hospital, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, PTA Board Member, Clive School Library, Blue Bird Leader for Camp Fire Girls, and was named "Neighbor of the Week" in the local paper. Her favorite volunteer activity was brailing books for the blind.

Memberships include Sigma Delta Tau Sorority, Temple B'nai Jeshurun, Jewish Federation, Jewish Women International, Franklin Library, Heritage Club of America, Emeritus Club of Indiana Unversity and was secretary of B'nai Brith Women.

Survivors include her son, Hal Wittenstein of Des Moines; grandsons: Nathan and Jacob Wittenstein, great grandchild, Harrison Wittenstein; sister, Jacqueline Jaffe of Deerfield, IL; nephew, John (Ramona) Jaffe; great nieces: Jill (Ian) Grunes, Carly (Jonathan) Linton, Taylor Jaffe; great nephew, Dale Jaffe; great-great niece, Laney;cousins and many friends. Shirley was preceded in death by parents, daughter, Jody and her niece, Laney.
