Sigurd Einar Anderson III, died on Sept. 22, surrounded by his loving family, after a valiant and inspiring battle with cancer. He was 47 years old. If we are measured by the joy brought to others, he lived a rare and immeasurable life.

A teacher treasured by his students at Bridges, a devoted husband and adoring father to Julie, Sean and Andy, an incomparable son and brother to Ann, Sigurd and Mertze, a loving uncle to Ian, and a wellspring of humor, love and loyalty to his legion of friends, he crafted a legacy that overcomes our sorrow with his strength, our grief with his unquenchable laughter, our questions with his simple answer of "live and love, well and truly."

A native of Des Moines, and a citizen of the world, he was graduated from The Hotchkiss School and Drake University. An avid cyclist, patron of the arts, supporter of the LIVESTRONG Foundation, Planned Parenthood, and many other organizations, he gave of himself to all causes and individuals striving to make a difference.

The family asks that any donations or remembrances be made to LIVESTRONG Foundation (Lance Armstrong Foundation, National Mail Processing Center, P.O. Box 6003, Albert Lea, MN 56007-6603) or Youth Emergency Services and Shelter (YESS, 918 SE 11th Street, Des Moines, IA 50309).

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, October 14, 10:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church.

A celebration of his life, "SIGFEST" will take place for family and friends on Saturday, November 29, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Marriott Ballroom Downtown Des Moines.

His light shone much too briefly, but leaves the world a better, brighter place. Its warmth remains in our hearts.

By his friend Arthur Orduna.
