Obituary

Sister Michelle Schiffgens, CHM, 84, died March 3, 2015, at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Johnston, IA.

Services at Bishop Drumm Our Lady of Peace Chapel are Thursday, March 5, at 4 pm. Visitation at Humility of Mary Center, Magnificat Chapel, 820 W. Central Park Ave., Davenport, March 6: Rosary 4 pm, Vigil Service 7 pm. Funeral Mass is March 7, 11 am in Magnificat Chapel. Burial follows in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Davenport.

Marilyn Lucille Schiffgens was born June 27, 1930, in Ottawa, IL, to Joseph and Julia Mary O'Connor Schiffgens. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary on September 8, 1952, and professed final vows December 31, 1955. Her degrees in Education are BA, Marycrest College, MA and Ph.D., University of Iowa.

In Davenport, she taught at St. Vincent School and was the initial principal at John F. Kennedy Catholic. At Marycrest College and Teikyo/Marycrest International University, she chaired the Education Department.

Well known in local educational circles and highly regarded nationally, she served as president of the Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education and was a member of other educational associations. She was selected Iowa educator of the year by the Iowa Learning Disabilities Association.

She retired to Humility of Mary Center in 2002, and moved to Bishop Drumm in 2012, where she resided until her death.

Sister Michelle was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Julie Gugerty and Lauretta Borowick, Palatine, IL. She is survived by her sisters, Adell Freeman of Fairfax, CA, and Annette McAlevy of Arlington, VA, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as Sisters and Associates of her CHM community. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.
