Stanley Robert Hiersteiner, 94, died Sunday, December 25, 2011 at Deerfield with his children by his side. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2011 at the Temple B'Nai Jeshurun. Burial was at Jewish Glendale Cemetery.

Stanley was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Harry & Bess (Cohen) Hiersteiner on June 26, 1917. He was a life-long resident of Des Moines spending much of his boyhood working in his father's theater, The Family Theater. He attended Bird Elementary where he was the marble champion, Callanan Junior High and Roosevelt High School where he was selected for the All City Baseball team.

After spending a year at Grinnell College he returned home to manage the family furniture store, Siegel's Furniture. During World War II, while stationed in Denver, CO he met, fell in love and married Shirley Tepper. Soon after the wedding he was deployed to France. Upon his return, they moved to Des Moines to live, work and raise their family.

Stan managed Siegel's until 1979. Downtown renovation caused Siegel's to close and forced him into an early retirement. He then was able to spend more time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and pursue his passion for golf. His golf career spanned 85 years, beginning at Waveland, where he would ride his bike to the course with his clubs on his back. He became a fixture at Hyperion after 1955 and was still playing golf when he became an honorary member at the age of 90, despite the handicap of suffering from macular degeneration. His kind friend Roger Burns helped to spot his ball.
He belonged to Temple B'nai Jeshuran where the Hiersteiner family were founding members.
Stan was a genial, affable friend to everyone. He was witty and was always joking and playfully teasing. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter and courtliness.

He is survived by his children Debra Feintech, Susan (Josh) Kimelman, both of Des Moines, and Robert (Jan) Hiersteiner of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He leaves nine grandchildren; Brian (Laura) Feintech, Elizabeth (Geoff) Harold, Jeffrey Feintech, Sarah (Dan) Schatz, Rebecca (Howard) Elgart, Michael Kimelman, Laura, Sophie and Allison Hiersteiner, and seven great grandchildren: Emily, Talia and Gabe Schatz, Shayna and Jason Elgart and Sam and Morrison Harold; his sister Shirley Feldman, his sisters-in-law Jean Hiersteiner and Annette Tepper and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, his brother Walter, his brothers-in-law Roger Feldman and Arnold Tepper, and his great grandson Max Feintech.
The family greatly appreciates the kindness and care he received from both Mercy Hospital and the nursing staff at Deerfield. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to the charity of your choice.
