Stephen Joseph Buckley passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at his home. Steve's body was cremated and a private ceremony for the burial of his remains was held at the Scatter Garden at Glendale Cemetery. No other services are planned.

Steve was born in Cedar Rapids on October 30, 1948. He grew up there and graduated from Regis High School. He went to Loras College in Dubuque and then served in VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America). Throughout the course of his adult life, he worked in construction and then the hospitality industry as a cook. In recent years he was disabled. Steve enjoyed collecting coins and stamps. He was an avid reader of classic novels, history and science fiction. He also greatly enjoyed documentaries.

Throughout his life Steve was always interested in American Indian culture. Over the course of many years, he visited various Indian reservations around the country and participated in several of their ceremonies. As a result of his love of the American Indian culture, he donated to numerous Indian charities. He also felt strongly about protecting the environment, so he also contributed to various environmental organizations.

Steve is survived by his twin brother Michael and his wife Mary of Omaha, NE; his sister Lynn Schooley and her husband Pat of Springfield, MO; and his younger brother Edwin III, also of Des Moines; and five nephews and nieces, Christian and Kim Buckley of Omaha, Andreanna Schooley of Springfield and Alexis and Christopher Buckley of Des Moines. He was preceded into eternal life by his parents and a nephew, Jason Reese.

Any memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Food Bank of Iowa or to a charity of your choice.

***** Steve is loved and will be missed. *****
