Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Stephen Harris Copple, loving father, grandfather, and brother, who passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025 at age 84 surrounded by his loving family and friends in his final moments. Steve was born July 26, 1940 to Verna and Clarence Copple.

Steve graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended University of Miami. He was the owner of City Supply until he sold it in 1994 and retired. He also formed a cooperation STEF Unlimited with Tom Brown, Fred Albright, Edward Mattis. They opened a restaurant called Wall Street located in West Des Moines, which is now occupied by Nick’s Bar and Grill. They eventually branched out to Market that was located in the Howard Johnson Hotel (now Mercy College (Downtown)). At the same time they ventured into concession stand business, taking over the concession at Sec Taylor Stadium (now Principal Park) for Iowa Oaks and Iowa Cubs baseball. Stephen was known for his love of fishing and traveling. He would take fishing trips to Canada with his father and friends. They would fly into the remote lakes on a small float plane.

He leaves behind his children, Sherri (Jake) Fuller, Amy Horner; four grandchildren, Chad (Ashley) Rhiner, Shelby Rhiner (Nick Costanzo), Luke Christensen, and Maci Horner; sister, Gail (Steve) Ritzwoller; and two nieces, Tracy Dombek and Lauren (Mike) Eagle.

A celebration of his life will be held on February 14, 2025 beginning at 11:00 AM at Temple B’nai Jeshurun. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, family would like memorial contributions directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
