Obituary

Steve was born to Martha and Edward Flanagan on October 2, 1946 in Martens Ferry, Ohio and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from North High School in 1965 and served in the Navy for 4-years following. After leaving the Navy, he completed a 4-year apprenticeship as a brick mason.

He married Karen Goehring on September 22, 1973 and had a career in Des Moines for a number of years in that trade. After moving to Seattle, WA in 1978, Steve was in a masonry partnership in the greater Seattle area. He was a master craftsman at his trade, with an eye for perfection. As Steve would say, “I’ve got an eye like a dead bass”, so much so that any picture in anyone’s house that was not level and plumb drove him nuts. Steve had a great sense of humor which entertained everyone he was with.

He loved salmon fishing throughout the Pacific Northwest. He also took many fishing trips along the Oregon coast which he greatly enjoyed, thus providing many wonderful salmon dinners as a result.

Steve greatly enjoyed his Iowa family and his Washington family. Steve had numerous nieces and nephews that were as near and dear to him as if they were his own kids. We all have many wonderful stories of great times together, especially those involving Steve’s humor. He was also a great animal lover. His dogs over the years were very special to him, and even his wife Karen’s cat became his friend.

He was preceded in death by his Mother Martha Erickson, sister Mary Nizzi, sister Susan DeBartolo, and brother Bruce Erickson.

He is survived by his wife Karen of over 50 years, plus very special nephews and nieces: Jeff & Sherry DeBartolo, Cheryl & Rick Young, Rich and Holly DeBartolo, Mike and Shannon Erickson, Katie Erickson and Dan Hayek, Mike Goehring, Peggy and Jim Rodrigues, and Sara and Jeremy Heisler.

Arrangements by Iles Westover Chapel.
