Obituary

Steven Dewaine Parsons
11/19/1953- 3/16/2014

Steve Parsons, 60, of Lemons, MO, died Sunday March 16, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, surrounded by family and friends after having been recently diagnosed with cancer.

Steve graduated from Unionville High School in 1971 after being a member of the National Honor Society and president of the senior class. He had played baseball in the summer and football for 4 years, his senior year he was captain of the varsity team. He then attended Northeast Missouri State College in Kirksville.

He married Jennifer Newell in 1972(later divorced) and raised a family. Family meant the world to Steve. He was a devoted father, grandpa, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend. Steve was happily awaiting the arrival of his newest grandson, who Shea and Melissa have decided to name after him.

Steve was a hard worker. He started working for the Hy-Vee in Unionville when he was 16. He went on to work for Hy-Vee as a meat cutter and manager of the meat dept. where he enjoyed helping set up new stores across the Midwest. He then started working for Sam's Club and moved the family to Des Moines in 1992 to set up the new store. After retiring from Sam's Club in 2000 he moved back to Lemons and returned to school, earning an Associate's degree from the Indian Hills Community College in Centerville, IA.

Steve was very community-oriented, belonging to many groups and organizations including: the Lemons volunteer fire dept., where he served as Chief, the Sons of the American Legion, the Lemons community building board, the Parsons Cemetery board, the Unionville 911 board and the Putnam Co. Emergency Management board. He was also a trained storm spotter, enjoyed working as the food stand superintendent at the Putnam Co. fair each year where he was the "go-to guy" and was key in helping to plan other community events in Lemons and Unionville.

Steve is survived by children: Jamie (Chris) Bates of Montesano, WA, and Shea (Melissa) Parsons of Des Moines, IA; daughter-in-law, Michelle Parsons of Des Moines; grandchildren, Nellie Sue KangGuo and Audrey Elaine Parsons (Shon), Joey Ramona and Jeb Shon the Dude Parsons (Shea) and Maxwell Emerson Bates (Jamie); mother, Doris Parsons of Lemons, MO and sister, Sherry (Mickey) Martin of Des Moines; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends. Steve was preceded in death by his son, Shon, and father, Eldon.

A memorial and pot-luck lunch will be held in Steve's honor Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Lemons Community Building, 26829 - 225th St. Unionville, MO from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. followed by a graveside service in the Lemons cemetery. Families are asked to bring a dish or dessert to share along with any pictures of or stories about Steve that everyone can enjoy.

The family has asked that instead of flowers, donations can be made to the Lemons Community Building, in care of Doris Parsons.

Steve was able to donate his eyes to The Iowa Lions Eye Bank to help others in need. The family also requests that anyone who has not filled out an organ donor card should do so in Steve's memory.
