Obituary

Steven Acheson Young, 60, of Bondurant, formally of Urbandale, passed away of complications of diabetes on July 30, 2022. A visitation will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines. A Celebration of Steve’s Life will be held on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Des Moines, with burial to follow at McDevitt Grove Cemetery in Urbandale.

Steve was born on December 10, 1961, to JoAnn (Acheson) and Robert Young. He grew up in Urbandale and was active in Boy Scouts. It was during that time that he found his love for camping, fishing and hunting that continued throughout his life. He graduated from Urbandale High School in 1980, where he was active in football, wrestling, and track. He was also a member of the band where he played the clarinet and saxophone. Steve was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan. You would also find Steve cheering on his beloved Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers. Steve had a wonderful sense of humor and loved telling a good joke.

He made a career in sales and spent the past seven years at YRC and made many wonderful friends during his time there.

On May 20, 2000, he was united in marriage to Melissa Toms in Tama, Iowa. Melissa and Steve enjoyed traveling, tailgating, boating, dinners out with friends and entertaining family and friends at their home. Steve loved to cook, and you never left the Young’s house hungry!

Steve is survived by his wife of over 22 years, Melissa, along with their fur babies Winston and Addison, his sister Susan (Louie) Anderson of Des Moines, his mother-in-law Lee Ann Toms of Toledo, his father-in-law Bill (Judy) Toms of Johnston, His sister-in-law Jennifer (Ken) Toms of Hiawatha, his nieces Abigail (Rick) Ortiz of Tama and Christina (Kellan) Overton of Denver, CO, nephew’s Nathan Ortiz of Sioux Falls, SD and Juan Ortiz of Cedar Rapids, his Uncle Doug (Marianne) Young of Florissant, CO and his Aunt Dorothy Young of Colorado Springs, CO. He will also be greatly missed by cousins, great nephews and nieces.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents and his great nephew Salum Ortiz.

The family would like to thank the medical and nursing staff on 7th floor south at Mercy Hospital for all their care and to the wonderful nurses and staff at Kavanagh House for all their compassion during Steve’s stay. We would also like to thank the Bondurant EMS for all their assistance over the past year. Finally, the family would like to thank all the friends and neighbors for all their visits, calls and prayers. Steve touched many lives and it really showed by the outpouring of support during his illness and throughout his life. He will be deeply missed.

In honor of Steve, please feel free to wear your favorite Hawkeye attire as a tribute to his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes!

Memorial Contributions may be directed to the family for a future memorial plan.
