Obituary

Sue Reichardt, a lifelong resident of Des Moines, died peacefully early Saturday morning, December 20, 2014. She was surrounded by her family and had the supportive care of the Edgewater Staff and WesleyLife Hospice.

Sue was born on December 19, 1929, one of the three children of Roland and Irene Manbeck of Des Moines. She gave unwavering companionship and loyalty to her family throughout her life. She was the most loving and devoted mother to her three children, Barbara, Doug and Duke. She has a surviving sister, Barbara Rugtiv, who resides in California with her family. Sue was preceded in her death by her brother, Dick Manbeck, and her husband of 52 years, Bill Reichardt, a Des Moines clothier, athlete and politician.

Sue was an exceptional woman who took great pride in her community and the state of Iowa. She graduated with an English degree from the University of Iowa in 1952 where she was also a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and selected to be the Iowa Interfraternity Queen.

Sue was an active member of the Des Moines community and a prominent figure in the social scene along with her late husband. She was easily recognized around town with her outgoing and friendly personality and was a respected fundraiser in local organizations including the Junior League, Red Cross and other service leagues.

As a member of the Wakonda Country Club for over 80 years, she was a well known and popular figure at the club throughout the years. She enjoyed robust health for most of her life and was an avid tennis player, golfer and snow skier. She loved all of her special and memorable world-wide travel adventures with family and friends, and was especially fond of spending time in Okoboji and Arizona.

Sue was a competitive bridge player and took great pride in her weekly games. She cherished her lifelong friendships and was always welcoming and helpful to the new friends in her life. She worked behind the scenes to help her husband in the clothing business and speech writing. As an exceptional hostess, she loved the opportunity to entertain at her beautiful home on Foster Drive. During many special evenings, she and her husband would include political figures, athletes, Hollywood celebrities and countless friends to celebrate with great food and drinks.

Sue was relentless in her pursuit to enjoy life to its fullest and was an incredible optimist by nature. She was a natural beauty even in her later years with gorgeous silver/white hair and a contagious smile. She was a stylish dresser and carried herself with a casual elegance around the city. Sue Reichardt truly loved the city of Des Moines and would tell you that she has lived a glorious, exciting and very blessed life in the state of Iowa.

Sue's incredible spirit will be carried on by her three children, Barbara (Buz) Weisberg, Doug (Debbie) Reichardt and Duke (Carole) Reichardt as well as her nine grandchildren who she so dearly loved, Jessica Jensen, Cody (Shalimar) Jensen, Jack Jensen, Kristin (Seth) Hall, Katie (Jim) Bishop, Randy (Sarah) Reichhardt, Austin Reichardt, Dan Reichardt and Brynn Reichardt; and her five precious great grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor, Savannah, Ben and Jase.

Sue's family extends a special thanks to her loyal companion, caregiver and friend, Jack Price, who courageously helped her through the last few difficult years.

There will be a celebration of Sue's life and a memorial service in early spring of 2015. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Bill Reichardt YMCA Partners with Youth Fund or WesleyLife Hospice.
