Obituary

Teresa Margaret Swalla, 80, went to her eternal reward on Thursday, February 20, 2014. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 23, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid, where a rosary service will begin at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 24, at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.

Teresa was born on November 12, 1933 in Madrid and lived there until her marriage to William (Bill) Swalla on July 4, 1950. She and Bill moved to a farm south of Madrid in 1953. In 1975, they moved to a farm near Stuart, Iowa. Teresa moved back to Madrid in 2011 to live at the Cedars and then the Madrid Home.

Teresa was foremost a homemaker for her husband and 14 children. She was employed as a Family Program Assistant for Iowa State University Extension during the Farm Crisis and later cooked for the Congregate Meals program. She was a dedicated member of All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart, Catholic Daughters, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Garden Club. She created the Stuart Youth and Enrichment Center in Stuart and served on its board and as its Director for 10 years. She was the treasurer for the Stuart Farmer's Market and sang in the Community Choir. She helped create the Stuart Food Pantry and served on its board. She was creative and loved to sing, quilt, write, draw and paint. She shared a love of the outdoors with her husband, Bill and they passed that love on to their children. Teresa had a zest for life and she lived a life of service to others. She was a dedicated and loving mother to her 14 children and delighted in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her sister, Sister Mary Ann O'Deay of St. Francis, WI; brother, John (Anna) O'Deay of Venice, CA; 13 children, Kathleen Amos, of Galt, CA, Dan (Sheryl) Swalla of Coon Rapids, IA, Carol (Dan) Knipp of Fair Oaks, CA, Tom (Dorene) Swalla and Mary (Steve) Holmes both of Madrid, Billie Swalla of Seattle, WA, Don (Lynn) Swalla of Cheyenne, WY, Angela Swalla of Boone, Albert (Syndie) Swalla of Randall, IA, Rick (Katie) Swalla of Ames, Susie (Steve) Wolfe of Lathrop, MO, Rose Swalla of Stuart, IA and Chris (Lori) Swalla of Earlham, IA, 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
