Thelma Umland Obituary

Thelma Rae Umland, 87, of Urbandale, Iowa passed away on March 22, 2025 at home surrounded by those who loved her. Services will be held at Aldersgate Methodist Church on Saturday, March 29th beginning at 11 am. A visitation will be held the hour prior from 10:00 am- 11:00 am. Interment will be at Arlington Heights Cemetery in Audubon, Iowa at 3:00 pm.

Thelma Rae Lacy was born in Cameron Township, Iowa on July 25,1937 to Floyd and Lois Lacy. She was baptized at the Audubon Methodist Church in 1941 and confirmed in 1950 at the age of 13. She graduated from Gray High School in 1955. She then attended St. Anthony School of Nursing to receive her LPN and graduated in 1957. She earned her RN degree from DMACC in 1985. Thelma worked at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital for over 35 years until her retirement in 1993. Thelma was a great caretaker, she enjoyed helping people when they came to her at their time of need and enjoyed being there to make the biggest difference to them.

She met Willis at a basketball game in Gray, and they were married on March 2, 1957 in Miami, Oklahoma. They made their home in Gray where they raised their four children. In 2014, Thelma moved to Urbandale after the passing of her husband to be closer to family. Thelma loved nursing, gardening and flowers. Most of all she loved her family and spending time with them.

Thelma is survived by her four children, Dan (Deb) Umland of Audubon, Deb Fyfe of Alleman, Diane Umland, and Dave (Kris) Umland both of Urbandale; grandchildren, Stacey (Anthony) Barber of Coon Rapids, MN, Michelle (Matt) Siepker of Huxley, Michael (Lizz) Umland of Slater, Kasi (Brian) Wolfer of Elkhart, Jake Fyfe of Ames, Matt Umland of Urbandale, and Meredith Umland of Urbandale; grandchildren, Mason, Drew, Addyson, Tylan, Neva, AJ, Mack, Leo, Briggs, Landon, and Kasen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Umland; parents, Floyd and Lois Lacy; brother, Lloyd Lee; son-in-law, Bruce Fyfe.
