"Thelma Schulze Borgstedt, 97, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away December 16, 2003. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, December 20 at Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine, Iowa.

Thelma was born on December 2, 1906 in Burke, South Dakota to John G. and Laura Haggerty Schulze, pioneer homesteaders near Burke. Thelma lived in Burke until her graduation from Burke High School. Thelma continued her education at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Nursing School in Council Buffs, Iowa graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1927. She married Floyd Borgstedt in 1928 and resided in Des Moines, Iowa until her death. Floyd Borgstedt passed away in 1962. At the time of her death, Thelma was a resident of Ramsey Home.

Thelma was an active member of Quota Club, Questors, Easter Seals Auxiliary and other professional organizations. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She worked as a private duty nurse and in the office of Dr. Phoenicie. Later she joined her husband in operating the Borgstedt Microscope Sales and Service business. Upon her husband's death, Thelma successfully operated the business until she retired in 1994 at age 88.

The South Dakota prairie and the devotion of her family guided Thelma's life and gave her a positive view of life. Those who knew her admired Thelma and her accomplishment in business and life's journey. Thelma worked most of her life but spent time enjoying traveling, family and friendships. She enjoyed travel, the arts and collecting. Thelma's humor, graciousness, deep interest and love for all her extended family of nieces, nephews and their children will be sadly missed.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; her older brother, Harley; and younger brothers, Lyle and John Wesley.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Juanita Schulze of Zanesville, Ohio; nephews, Gary Schulze of California, Roderick Schulze of Texas and Stephen Schulze of Ohio; nieces, Jean Straker of Zanesville, Ohio, Carol Hallet of Virginia and Nancy McDermott of Colorado; and several great-nieces and nephews.
