Thomas A. Stroope died August 16, 2009 at Taylor House after bravely fighting his second battle with cancer.

The son of William and Frances Stroope, he was born May 6, 1944 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Marion High School and continued his education at the University of Iowa earning a bachelor's degree in business administration. He was commissioned an officer in the United States Air Force upon graduation. On June 22, 1968 he married Susan Lister of Dallas Center. They lived in Columbus, OH and Evanston, IL, returning to central Iowa in 1973. Tom graduated from the University of Illinois, Chicago Circle with a Master of Arts in Teaching and taught social studies and coached at Martensdale-St. Mary's and in the Des Moines Public Schools at Meredith Middle School and Hoover and North high schools. He was employed at several financial institutions in Des Moines, most recently at Wells Fargo Financial.

He was most proud of his four children: the Rev. Annika Lister Stroope and husband Jeremy West of Minneapolis, MN; Timothy L. Stroope of Iowa City; Celia Stroope Bronson and husband Josh of Westminster, MD; and Theodore L. Stroope and wife Christy of Des Moines. His life is celebrated by his children and grandchildren Heidi Bronson, Jeanette Bronson and Vianne Stroope-West; his wife Susan; his sister Arline Hutchinson of Bella Vista, AR; and his extended family. A life-long learner, Tom was a scholar of everything from baseball to history to theology. His "sayings" and sense of humor will be sorely missed. His children thank their mom for all her care for Dad these past several months.

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Center, IA on Monday, August 31 at 7:00 PM. Family members will be present one hour before the service and a reception will be held following the service.

Memorials may be made to the Des Moines Presbytery for the Our Sister Parish El Salvador partnership, the Animal Rescue League, and Taylor House.
