Thomas Alan Burmeister, 52, died Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, of complications from pancreatic cancer. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. tonight at Grandview Park Funeral Home and a funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Grandview Park Baptist Church, 1701 E. 33rd St. In lieu of flowers or plants, please make memorials to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Tom is survived by his wife Carol; his mother Viola; his brother James and wife Nancy of rural Dunkerton; his sister Julene Glasgow and husband Robert of Georgia; his stepchildren, Cynthia Merrifield and husband John Briggs and Jeffrey Merrifield and wife Carrie; his grandsons, Tanner and Cody Merrifield and Noble Briggs; and numerous nephews and nieces. Tom was preceded in death by his brother Timothy in 1980 and his father Charles in 1995.

Tom was born Oct. 24, 1952, in Des Moines. He developed a love for airplanes when he was young. As a teen-ager, he earned his pilot's license before his driver's license. Tom graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1971 after majoring in aviation mechanics. He later returned to Tech High School (now Central Campus), where he taught aviation mechanics for 22 years, until 1998. From 1998 until 2004, he was a self-employed airplane mechanic.

All his talents and abilities came in handy because he liked to collect antiques, and most needed a little TLC. He spent his life working hard, restoring things such as his antique airplanes and cars and doing for others. He was well known for being able to fix anything. When one of his grandsons would break a toy, off it went to Grandpa Tom. When others needed help working on houses, airplanes or cars, Tom was always there with a helping hand. His helpfulness, among many other great qualities, brought him love and gratitude from his family and many friends.

"May the work I've done, speak for me."
