E. Thomas (Tom) DeHaven died Sunday, February 4, 2007 at Scottish Rite Park from pneumonia as a complication of Parkinson’s disease.

He was born August 7, 1928, in Hiram, Ohio where he attended high school and also graduated from Hiram College in 1949. Tom earned a master’s degree in hospital administration and served as a missionary in India with the United Christian Missionary Society. On returning, home he was an administrator of hospitals and retirement homes in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Iowa. He moved to Des Moines in 1982 serving as chief executive officer/administrator at Ramsey Memorial Home in Des Moines. He was also the regional operations director with the National Benevolent Association. He retired in 1993.

Tom had a passion for music and enjoyed choral singing in his church choir and the Des Moines Choral Society. An avid reader, he enjoyed and promoted lifelong learning. He was a savvy businessperson whose life’s work was to extend care and compassion to those in need. Tom was a member of First Christian Church, Rotary, Masons and he was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Tom married Barbara Hoskin in 1955. He is survived by Barbara, their three children Matt (Karen) DeHaven, Steve (Jane) DeHaven, all of Des Moines, and Cathy (Dave) DeHaven Swanson of Iowa City. Tom and Barb have 6 grandchildren. He is also survived by his only sibling Don (Hazel) DeHaven of Tucson, Arizona.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at First Christian Church in Des Moines on Sunday, February 11. Services will be held at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church on Monday, February 12.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to be allocated to Tom’s favorite affiliations (First Christian Church, Jackman Hospital in India, and Scottish Rite Park).
