On December 29, 2008 Thomas E. O'Connell, 87, went home to be with the Lord after a short illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of service. Pastor Bill Green from First Federated Church will conduct the service. Internment will be with military honors at Glendale Cemetery following the service.

Tom was born on February 14, 1921. He was a resident of the Veteran's Retirement home in Washington D.C. Tom served his country in the US Navy for 20 years with tours of duty in the Pacific Theater during WW II and Korea. Tom was a medical corpsman in the Navy and was assigned to the US Marines in his WW II service. After retiring from the Navy, Tom worked for the US Postal Service in Des Moines, Iowa. Tom was a life long member of First Federated Church in Des Moines, Iowa and taught Sunday school at the retirement home for many years.

Tom was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy, his parents, John and Daisy O'Connell, an infant brother John, and two sisters Alice and Mary. Tom and Dorothy had three sons, John (Kathy), retired and living in Alabama, Dan (Marsha), living in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tim (Leanne), living in Palos Park, Ill, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, two sisters, Golda and Lois, and one brother, Porter.

Tom loved to read and take walks. He took great delight in asking his children and grandchildren trivia questions about history, geography, and the Bible. He enjoyed all things military and related stories of all the military attractions he visited in the Washington, DC area while going on tours with other residents of the retirement home.

Tom will be greatly missed for the Godly example he set for his family.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Federated Church Missions Fund.
