Thomas M. Hamilton, beloved husband and father, passed away at home on April 26, 2011, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was 73 years old. Visitation will be at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel, 2121 Grand Ave., Des Moines on Thursday, April 28, 2011, from 5-7 p.m. Memorial funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011 at Lutheran Church of Hope, 925 Jordan Creek Parkway, West Des Moines.

Tom was born on March 3, 1938 in Davenport, Iowa, to Burley and Adrienne (Hartley) Hamilton. He excelled in athletics as a young man and played football, basketball, and ran track at Davenport Central High School. He went on to play football and letter at Drake University and was a proud member of the 1958 Sun Bowl team. He received his undergraduate degree in business, followed by a Master's Degree in Psychology. He was also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. After graduation, he served his country in the air force, then married his college sweetheart and love of his life, Gayle Graff. He began his professional career at Northwestern Bell and then worked with Personnel Inc. before founding Hamilton & Associates in 1972. There he truly found a profession he loved, helping clients achieve success through talent acquisition while taking great satisfaction in assisting individuals in advancing their careers. He merged his business with McGladrey and Pullen in 1988 and worked as a Senior Consulting Partner until he retired from the firm in 1999. He then cofounded Selection Resources with his son and offered advanced pre-employment testing services. He was an accredited SPHR through the Society of HR Management.

His career was also highlighted by community service in leadership roles with the Chamber of Commerce, Youth Homes of Mid America, the YMCA, Hope Ministries and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was a member of Rotary International for 43 years and was a "7 Gallon" blood donor to the Blood Center of Iowa. Tom took pleasure in serving the community and serving others through his tireless volunteer activities.

Tom enjoyed staying active and was an avid handball player for many years. He enjoyed watching sporting events, participating in outdoor activities, including spending time at his small farm in southern Iowa. He was an avid pheasant hunter and fisherman, and owned two German Shorthair Pointers, who were near and dear to his heart.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Gayle, his daughter Sheila, son Tom Jr., his mother Adrienne and brother Robert. He was preceded in death by his father Burley.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be directed to The Greater Des Moines YMCA or Hope Ministries

God bless all of Tom's caregivers for their compassionate work over these past few months, and God bless the United States of America.
