Timothy James Means died May 27, 2014 after a long and painful journey with mental illness. A memorial service for Tim will be held July 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 600 6th Avenue, Des Moines, IA.

Tim was born in Des Moines, IA on July 27, 1980 to Sharon McDonough Means and J. Jeffrey Means. Tim attended school in Iowa City, Dubuque and Des Moines and completed his GED High School requirements in 2001. He was very happy and successful while attending Des Moines Area Community College and received his Associate of Arts Degree in 2006. He then entered Iowa State University in the field of Information Technology and successfully completed all but a few courses of his degree.

From an early age, Tim enjoyed life in all its forms. He was a happy and content infant and toddler in his early home on Waterbury Circle. He was active in soccer, gymnastics and drama in elementary school while living in Dubuque. As young person, Tim enjoyed acting in what has become the Kate Goldman Children's Theatre in the Des Moines Community Playhouse, doing behind-the-scenes stage work at the Playhouse and later volunteering at the Stoner Theater. Tim was mesmerized by magic and during his middle and early high school years enjoyed entertaining children, family and friends with the tricks he practiced. He loved his brother's dog, Willie, and faithfully cared for his feline companion, Stripey, for many years. Tim enjoyed a trip to the Havasupai Indian Reservation at the west end of the Grand Canyon with his mother and brother, hiking trips with his mother to Kartchner Caverns and the desert areas around Tucson, AZ, and to Ledges State Park near Boone, IA with his father.

Tim treasured his independence and was a proud host for family in his apartments in Ames and Des Moines. At critical points in his life, Tim found spiritual support with the pastoral staff of the Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames and the AA community in Des Moines.

Tim had a natural ability with math and foreign languages which he enjoyed learning and speaking. He conversed easily with visitors from Russia, Ukraine, and Tunisia hosted at his father and stepmother's home. He was an avid student of French and tutored French while at Iowa State. He dreamed of traveling and studying one day in France with the ultimate goal of teaching English to French students. A high point of Tim's life was attending his brother's wedding in India in 2003, where he eagerly learned some Hindi and helped to translate for other family members.

Tim is survived by his mother, Sharon McDonough Means of Tucson, AZ; his father and stepmother, J. Jeffrey Means and Diane E. Glass of Des Moines, IA; his brother Aaron C. Means and his wife, Saraswati Bhadri, and their son Somayaaga Bhadri Means of Eagan, MN; his aunt, Margaret Ann Mendleson of Des Moines, IA; and maternal cousins, Kati Phelps Rogers of Whitestown, IN and Lisa Phelps of Alexandria, VA.

Tim was preceded in death by his grandparents Irene and Charles McDonough and Susie and John Means of Terre Haute, IN, and maternal Aunt and Uncle Gale and Thomas Phelps of Fishers, IN.

Contributions in Tim's honor may be sent to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Des Moines), P.O. Box 12174, Des Moines, IA 50312, or to the Playhouse, Kate Goldman Theatre, 831 42nd Street, Des Moines, IA 50312.
