Obituary

Twila Thompson, 74, passed away on January 10, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Twila fought a courageous battle with multiple myeloma.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, at Bondurant Christian Church, 4th and Grant in Bondurant, Iowa. Following fellowship at the church, internment will be at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Twila was born on October 31, 1937, to Murray J. and Mary Lorena (Bricker) Van Hemert in their home near Otley, Iowa. While growing up, she was a member of the Monroe Baptist Church. Twila attended Pella Community High School and then moved to Des Moines. She worked as a certified medical assistant and receptionist for the VA Hospital, Beaverdale Clinic, Dermatology Clinic, PC (Dr. Robert Schultz), Medical Clinic of Des Moines (Dr. Ismael Naanep and Dr. Belen Fernandez) and West Des Moines OBGYN, up until the time of her passing.

Twila was born with a talent for music. In the 1950s, she played the accordion at local venues with her family band, "The Van Hemert Family". She also played the piano and organ at various church functions. Throughout her life she loved to sing. Her love for travel resulted from the traveling she did as a child with her family. As an adult, a favorite destination was the state of Hawaii, where she frequently vacationed with her husband Larry, and most recently with her granddaughter Amanda. Members of her family accompanied her on multiple trips to Branson, Missouri and on a vacation to Disney World in Orlando, Florida. She and her sister Melba took two adventurous vacations to Colorado where she experienced whitewater rafting, jeep tours, and hiking. Twila looked forward to the Iowa State Fair each year and enjoyed going to numerous cultural events with her family and friends. She spent every Thursday going out to lunch with her co-workers. Twila loved her job. She enjoyed talking to patients and doing everything she could to make their visit to the doctor more enjoyable.

Twila will be missed by her children, Michele Renee (Boyce) Bailey of Bondurant; Karl Jay Thompson of Altoona; grandchildren, Nicholas Alan Bailey and Amanda Sue Bailey, both of Altoona and Dawn Marie Bailey, currently serving in the Peace Corps in Guatemala; sister, Melba (Thom) Cope of Tucson, AZ; and great-nieces Brooke and Kelsey Knuth of Johnstown, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Donald Kenneth Thompson (1970) and Lawrence B. Thompson (2005); and niece, Ingrid Rae (Helgeland) Knuth (2000).

The family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bondurant Christian Church, 304 Grant Street S, Bondurant, Iowa 50035. Online condolences may be left at IlesCares.com.
