Velda Ilene Morris, 93, died of cancer at Taylor House Hospice July 8, 2014. Services will be held Monday, July 14, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Waukee Christian Church and burial at the Waukee Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, July 13, 2014, at the Waukee Christian Church from 3 - 5 p.m. Her memory may be honored with a gift to the Waukee Christian Church.

Velda was born on February 7, 1921, in a farm house North of Waukee that her father built. She was the 2nd child and first daughter of Orville Martin Buterbaugh and Susan (Hawbaker) Buterbaugh. Velda attended a one room school house close to her home for her first 8 years of schooling. Then she completed her education at Waukee High School. During these school years, Velda enjoyed 4-H in which she held a county office. Many winters during her school age years were spent in California where her father worked as a carpenter to give Velda's mother some relief from the cold Iowa winters. After high school graduation, Velda worked at various office jobs in Adel including the Farm Bureau office. Velda married "the love of her life", Harold Morris on February 7, 1942, which also happened to be her 21st birthday. When Harold joined the Navy during WW II, she went with Harold to Stillwater, Oklahoma; San Francisco, California; and New London, Connecticut. After the war, Harold and Velda returned to the family farm West of Waukee and continued the farming tradition for 64 years. Velda, as is true with most Iowa farm families of her generation, was a strong partner in her marriage and the business of farming. She took care of the books, the family and kept the home fires burning and Harold took care of the rest. Velda helped farm and had her own tractor, a John Deere 60. She kept a large garden which included the canning and freezing. Her frozen sweet corn was legendary and will be greatly missed by her family. She enjoyed the fellowship of the Farm Bureau Association and the Waukee Christian Church. During this time, Velda also worked full time at the Brenton State Bank for 20 years.

Velda and Harold got the "travel bug" because of their experiences during WW II. They traveled all over the United States and Hawaii. These travels took them to over 35 of the lower 48 states. After their retirement they spent 24 winters in Mesa, Arizona where she could keep warm. They enjoyed square dancing, hiking the nearby mountains and playing cards. After Harold's death, Velda toured Alaska and cruised the Panama Canal with her son and daughter-in-law. She also had many trips to Colorado, Kansas and Texas for visits with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Velda was preceded in death by her husband, Harold and her brother, Galen Buterbaugh and his wife, Esther of Dallas Center, Iowa and her brother-in-law, Edgar John Morris and wife Jean.

If there are two words to describe Velda, it would be "classy lady". She was always perfectly dressed and coiffed. Velda was an outstanding homemaker and cook. She always had fresh baked cookies for her family.

Those that will miss her greatly are son Jerry of Plano, TX; son Terry and wife Cynthia of Granbury, TX.; sister-in-law, Suzanne Yates and husband, Merold of Normal, IL.; seven grandchildren, Christina Long, Bobbie Watson and husband, Allen; Sarah Mathews and husband, Reagan; Charles Morris; Scott Morris and wife, Emily; Paul Morris and wife, Allison; and Michael Morris and wife, Becky; 13 great-grandchildren, Cody McCracken, Lauren Mathews, Draegan Watson, Ashton Long, Brysen Long, Cole Mathews, Cooper Mathews, Emily Morris, Dayton Long, Nathan Morris, Ryan Morris, Everett Morris and Sylviana Morris, a large extended family, her Waukee friends and the many friends she made in Mesa, AZ.
