Obituary

Velma Cohen passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at her residence at Arbor Springs Assisted Living, where she resided for the past three years. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 25, 2011 at Tifereth Israel Synagogue 924 Polk Blvd. in Des Moines.
Velma was born March 11, 1914 in Des Moines to Kate and Mose Mitchnick and lived most of her adult life here with brief residences in Ft. Dodge and Omaha. She was a graduate of North High School. Her deceased siblings were Ruth Matulef and Merle Mitchnick. Her spouse of almost 61 years, was Nate Cohen, who passed away in 1997.

Velma loved music and playing cards. She was an avid sports fan and diligently followed the Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. In addition, she loved to knit and gave her trade mark handmade afghans to many of her family and friends. She was a lifelong member of Tifereth Israel Synagogue as well as numerous other Jewish organizations. Her family was the love of her life.

Memah, as she was affectionately called, was loved and adored by her daughter, Shari Engman (Stanley) of Des Moines; granddaughter, Kimberly Cain (Randy) of Des Moines; grandson, Randy Engman (Desiree) of Deerfield, IL; great grandson, Drew Rosenberg of Baltimore, MD and great granddaughters, Talia and Sophia Engman of Deerfield, Il.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Arbor Springs, Hospice of Central Iowa, and her friend and caregiver, Ann Bacot, for their special and compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tifereth Israel Synagogue Building Fund or Hospice of Central Iowa.
