Velma (Young) Hunter, 80, died Friday, May 14, 2004 at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Memorial Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004 at the Methodist Church in New Virginia. Private burial will be at a later date.

Velma was born the daughter of William and Fern (Hines) Blackford on January 10, 1924 in Des Moines. In 1942 Velma married John Young and together they farmed for over 35 years in the St. Marys area. John died in 1979. Velma then worked as head cook at Norwalk Manor and as a caregiver from her home.

In 1990 Velma married Don Hunter and together they enjoyed their resort in Minnesota and homes in Arizona and Texas. Don died in 1997. After Don's death Velma resided with her daughter, Marilyn near St. Marys. Velma loved to quilt and sew. She was a member of Methodist Church in New Virginia, Quilting Club in St. Marys and Order of the Eastern Star.

Velma was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and her brothers, Harold, Jim and Glen.

She is survived by daughters, Marilyn (Varion) Herrick of St. Marys and Linda Young of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Mary Lynn (Jason) Yossett of St. Marys and John (Tammy) Taylor of Altoona; two step grandchildren, Kim Taylor of Grimes and Craig Herrick of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven great-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her many friends, her family and her dog, Petey.
