Verlaine Hayes Obituary

Verlaine P. Hayes, 85, passed away September 3, 2024. Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 10 at New Life Lutheran Church, where visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Norwalk Area Food Pantry.

Verlaine Pauline, the daughter of Walter and Anna (Rathe) Sauerbrei, was born June 26, 1939 in Readlyn, Iowa and grew up in a family with her eleven siblings. On December 14, 1958 Verlaine was united in marriage with Delbert Hayes. Through her life, she worked and helped with several restaurant and foodservice operations. Verlaine was a big help to Delbert’s farming operation, helping bale hay and driving trucks at harvest.

Verlaine and Delbert’s home welcomed a number of people over the years who needed a place to stay or heal up. She enjoyed needlework and flower gardening. Verlaine kept an immaculate yard. As a member of New Life Lutheran Church, she enjoyed volunteering with the Norwalk Area Food Pantry.

Verlaine was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings: Willard, Warren, Wesley, Wayne, Violet, Valitha, and infant brother Werner.

Verlaine is lovingly remembered by her husband, Delbert; children: Jeff (Cindy) Hayes and Linda (Jeff) Aldrich; grandchildren: Jeffrey Hayes, Jr. (Amber), Jason Hayes (Ashley), Zachary Fath, and Elijah Fath (Shayla); great-grandchildren: Braxton Hayes, Carys Hayes, Harper Hayes, Harrison Hayes, Monroe Hayes, Bianca Fath, Penelope Fath, River Fath, and Holden Fath; and six siblings: Willis (Doris) Sauerbrei, Walter (Nanci) Sauerbrei, Woodrow (Cheryl) Sauerbrei, Virginia Sickles, and Veronica Buhr; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Sauerbrei.
