Obituary

Verle Emmert Hawbaker, 91, passed away September 6, 2011, at his home. He was born on January 16, 1920, in Dallas Center, Iowa to Emmert Hawbaker and Eliza Ann Wagaman. In 1941, he married Lucille Bass and they raised three daughters.

Verle farmed his whole life and sold Pioneer seed corn for 39 years. He and Lucille enjoyed working together in their large flower and vegetable gardens. Verle took great pride in always having the farm neat and highlighted with the colors of flowers. He enjoyed meeting and talking to people and will be remembered by his warm smile and infectious laugh.

He will be missed by his three daughters, Ruth Green of Ankeny, Linda (Jim) Brain of Newton and Faye (Dennis) Shelley of Urbandale; his five grandchildren, Mike Green, Kelly Green-Teno, Tracy Shelley-McGee, Robyn Shelley-Webster, and Tony Brain; his seven great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a younger brother, Dale Hawbaker, of Dallas Center. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille; his parents; seven brothers; and a sister.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 9, at the Waukee United Methodist Church. A service celebrating Verle's life will be at held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, also at the church, with burial following at the Waukee Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Waukee Methodist Church or the Iowa Alzheimer's Association.
