Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vicky Purcell, a deeply loved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Born on August 11, 1954, Vicky's life was one filled with love, devotion, and unwavering support for her family. She married Richard Purcell in March, 1972 and together they built a beautiful life, raising four wonderful boys: Dave (Tiana), Drew (Natalie), Dustin (Jackie), and Drake. Vicky’s love for her children knew no bounds.

Vicky was blessed with nine grandchildren—Chad, Briley, Kaitlyn, Chase, Colton, Shelby, Beau, Shay, and Maddie Sue. Known affectionately as “Nonny,” Vicky poured all her love into her children and grandchildren, delighting in spoiling them and cherishing every moment with them. They were her pride and joy, and she found immense happiness in being a grandma.

Vicky spent many years as a stay-at-home mom while also running an in-home daycare, where she poured her heart and soul into caring for the children as if they were her own. Her devotion created a nurturing and warm environment where every child felt safe and valued. Later, Vicky returned to college and became a registered nurse, dedicating herself to the medical field and caring for her patients as if they were family until she retired. Even after retiring, Vicky found new ways to touch lives, working at the local elementary school, providing care and support for children with special needs. Her patience, kindness, and understanding left a lasting impact on all who crossed her path.

Vicky made a lasting impression everywhere she was. As a Norwalk student, Vicky was known for being a talented athlete. Her achievement and accomplishments in athletics were extensive. Vicky led the Norwalk Warriorettes in basketball points year after year, excelled in track and field and even made it to State for throwing the shot put and discus. She was also a skilled softball player with impressive power behind the plate. Vicky held the school record for the most stolen bases for softball and also held the school record for shot put in track. Vicky took immense pride in her athletic achievements, and her competitive spirit never wavered.

Vicky’s generous spirit extended far beyond her family. She devoted her time and energy to volunteering at the Ankeny baseball fields while her children were growing up. Her commitment to the community was recognized when she was honored as "Volunteer of the Year" for her outstanding dedication and service. Vicky’s kindness and selflessness touched many lives, leaving an enduring legacy of compassion and community.

Vicky was known by many as Mom, Grandma Vicky, Nonny, and Crazy Grandma—but above all, she was the heart and soul of our family. Her infectious laugh, firecracker personality, and selfless love touched everyone she met. She was a constant presence and voice at her children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events, always cheering the team on with unmatched enthusiasm. Her famous cookies and scotch-a-roos were always a hit after the games.

Vicky had a unique gift for making every family gathering unforgettable, creating memories that will be treasured forever. She cherished time spent on garage sale adventures, fishing trips at the lake, sunny afternoons by the pool, bonfire sunsets, and visits to the family farm. Vicky’s unwavering love and support were a constant source of strength for her family, and her absence leaves a deep void in our hearts that will never be filled.

Vicky is survived by her sister, Marsha Ridgeway, and her brother, Tom Overholser. She was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter, Kaitlyn Purcell, and her parents, Dale and Mildred Overholser.

While Vicky may no longer be with us, her legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness will live on forever in our hearts. We take comfort knowing that her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, and the cherished memories of her will never fade.

Rest in peace, Vicky. You will be missed beyond measure and your love and light will continue to shine in our lives.

A memorial visitation for Vicky will be held from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, February 4 at Iles Norwalk Chapel. Online condolences are welcome at www.IlesFuneralHomes.com.
