Vincent Joseph Meyer, 84, died Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at Hospice Kavanagh House in Des Moines. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2005 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee, of which he was a member. His family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2005 at the church, with a vigil service beginning at 7 p.m.

Vincent was the 10th of 12 children born to Albert and Mary Meyer in 1921. He was valedictorian of his high school class, and following his first two years of college, he taught in a one room schoolhouse in rural Missouri. Vince enlisted in the Air Force in 1942. As lead bombardier in the 385th wing of the Army Air Corps, he flew 30 missions over Germany. Following the war, he returned to Maryville, MO and completed his studies at Northwest Missouri State College, graduating in 1947. He came to Waukee in 1947 as a social studies teacher and boys basketball and baseball coach. It was at Waukee High School in 1949 he met his future wife, Barbara Crist, the home economics teacher. They married July 27, 1950. In 1953, he became principal and athletic director at Waukee, and continued as principal until his retirement in March of 1984. Vince enjoyed golf, visiting Colorado and his loving wife, brothers, sisters, children and grandchildren.

Vince is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Barbara; son, John (Becky) Meyer of Crest Hill, IL; daughter, Jean Meyer (Brian Brockhouse) of Santa Clara, CA; son, Bill (Laura) Meyer of Elkton, MD; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sister, Pauline (Vincent) Derks of Maryville, MO; brothers, Leo of Clyde, MO, Fred of Gig Harbor, WA and Norbert (Lois) of Iowa City, IA; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Meyer of Clyde, MO, Margaret Meyer of Grays Lake, IL, Kay Wallace of Marion, IA and Virginia (Russ) Buchanan of Algona, IA.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Boniface Catholic Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
