Obituary

Violet (Vi) Melton, 90, passed away March 1, 2012 at Kavanagh Hospice Home following a lengthy illness after a severe stroke June 2003.

Vi was born in Tripoli, IA August 12, 1921. She attended 12 yrs. of school in Tripoli, IA, then 1 year at AIB in Des Moines. Vi started her working career at The Equitable in Des Moines when she met her life long soulmate. Vi was united in marriage to Gerald (Jake) Melton August 15, 1946 and enjoyed life together for 49 years till Jake passed away March 1996.

Vi enjoyed her position as sales manager for over 30 years with World Book Encyclopedia Co. Since reading and learning was her passion, this position was a perfect fit, especially while she and Jake raised 5 children. She loved growing plants & gardening. Feeding & bird watching became a loved hobby replacing feeding and child rearing once her children grew up! Among a dog & couple of cats, Vi enjoyed the company of several deer putting claim to her yard as their sanctuary.

Vi was a member to the St. Augustin Rosary & Alter Society, the Catholic Daughter's, the Mercy Guild, the Bishop Drum Guild, and the "Crazy 8's Club" which was a group of 8 fun lovin ladies. Vi was available to help anyone in need. She was known for her giving nature, sweet personality and million dollar smile. She never walked – always ran, so her 8 years in a wheel chair was misery to her.

Vi is survived by 3 of her 5 children, Dianne Melton, Debbie Jordan-Wheeler, & Mark Melton; 8 Grandchildren: Jeremy Jordan, Jessica Melton-Siems, MacKinzie Melton, Joshua, Krys & Karrin Melton and Nathan & Natalie Vance; 4 Great Grandchildren: Zachary & Jacob Jordan and Kolton & Josie Siems, her brother-in-law Paul Melton & his wife Ann, as well as several nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald Melton, her son Greg Melton and her daughter Dawn Vance.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 4, 2012 from 4-6 pm at Dunn's Funeral Home 2121 Grand Des Moines with a Vigil service beginning at 6 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am, Monday, March 5, 2012 at St. Augustin Catholic Church 545 42nd St. Des Moines with burial following at Glendale Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Hospice of Central Iowa. Kavanagh House on 56th in Des Moines. The family is very grateful for the exceptional care Vi received for 7 months while at the Kavanagh House.
