Obituary

Walter Clement Barnes, 80, died of congestive heart failure Monday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery at 9:30 a.m., Thursday prior to services.

Walter C. (Barney) Barnes was born August 21, 1923 to Walter Edgar and Florence Aldrich Barnes in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended Hanawalt Grade School, Laura Coffee Private Elementary School, Roosevelt High School and Drake University. Barney was a Farmer and farmed a Century Farm in Dallas and Polk Counties for sixty years, raising livestock and grain. He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving in the South Pacific for three years in New Guinea and the Philippines.

On June 18, 1947 he married Josephine Auner and enjoyed fifty-seven years of marriage. Barney was a Living History Farms volunteer for twenty-five years participating in the thrashing festivals, corn picking contests and providing instruction in horse team harnessing and driving. He served as a Senior Girl Scout Troop Advisor and Plymouth Church Sunday School teacher. Barney was an accomplished carpenter with a reverence for wood and timber preservation. He personally built a nationally recognized award winning home where he lived for fifty-seven years. He was a tireless advocate for education and opportunities of achievement for women.

Mr. Barnes was a member of the Adel American Legion, Farm Bureau, The Des Moines Club, The Pioneer Club of Des Moines, The Iowa Society for the Preservation of Historical Landmarks, The Iowa Barn Foundation, Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Plymouth Congregational Church United Church of Christ and the Thursday Night Dinner Club.

Walter C. Barnes was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Stewart Aldrich Barnes of Wickenburg, AZ. He is survived by his wife Josephine Auner Barnes of West Des Moines; three children, Thomas A. Barnes (Vicki) of Marion, Annie B. Braland (Sam) of Earlham, Susy B. Kelley (Bruce) of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother Dr. Barry O. Barnes of Ottumwa and a sister Beverly Barnes Rinker of Ogden.

Visitation will be held Wednesday April 14, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dunn's Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Living History Farms, 2600 - 111th Street, Urbandale, IA 50322.
