Obituary

Gene Hawk, 98, died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center in Des Moines. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 9 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel with inurnment to follow at Resthaven Mausoleum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Westover Chapel.

Gene was born in Bluffton, OH and had lived in the Des Moines area since the late 1930’s when he bought United Laundry Company. In 1944 he purchased Miller’s Laundry and Dry Cleaning Company which he later sold in 1973 at which time he became manager of Hopkins sporting Goods. Gene retired in 1983.

Gene was a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, Des Moines Club, Hyperion Field Club, Reciprocity Club, had served as President of the American Institute of Laundering and President of Junior Chamber of Commerce in the 1940’s. He was a member of the University Avenue Coalers semi-pro basketball team in the late 1930’s. Gene later sponsored many AAU teams through his businesses. He enjoyed bowling and bowled a perfect game in 1956. Gene was a long time member of First United Methodist Church.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald and his wife Opal. He is survived by his son in law Gene (Bonnie) Knepper of Urbandale, three granddaughters: Kayla (Bill) Richer of West Des Moines, Barbara (Jim) Brock of Urbandale, and Shelley Conlan of Des Moines, nine great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
