Walter N. Neumann, Jr., 90, a life-long resident of Des Moines, died peacefully on Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the Iowa Jewish Senior Life Center. Walter resided at 3801 Grand Avenue. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 3 at St. Augustin Catholic Church, 42nd St. and Grand Ave. Private burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Walter was born on April 28, 1917 in Des Moines to Walter and Pearle Neumann. He was proud of his heritage and descended from a pioneer family which arrived in Des Moines in 1856. He served his country in the Pacific during World War II as a Lieutenant Senior Grade in the U.S. Navy. Most of his adult life he worked in the family construction business, Neumann Brothers, Inc., until he retired as chairman of the firm in 1985.

Walt attended Hubbell Elementary and Roosevelt High School in Des Moines. He earned a degree in Architectural Engineering from Iowa State University. While attending Iowa State he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and played on the Iowa State Varsity basketball and golf teams. He was a life-long supporter of Iowa State Athletics and received Cy's Favorite Alum Award from the University in 1980.

He served as a member of the Des Moines Planning and Zoning Commission. He was also a member of the Downtown Rotary, Des Moines Pioneer, Wakonda, Des Moines and Embassy Clubs. Walt's favorite interests in life were his family, friends and athletics.

Walter is survived by his four children, Nick (Helen) Neumann, John (Mindy) Neumann, Kathryn (Jim) Neuwerth and Nancy (Frank) Acri all of Des Moines and seven grandchildren, Nick IV, Andy, Frank, Scott, Jamie, Elise and Blake. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 50 years, Rosemary "Fitzie" Neumann.

Friends may call at Iles Funeral Homes-Dunn's Chapel after noon Sunday where the family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions are being directed to Hospice of Central Iowa.
