Obituary

Walter R. "Judd" Spitznagel, age 97 years, six months and ten days, died Tuesday, January 16, 2007 of complications following a fall. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 20 at Wakonda Christian Church, 3938 Fleur Drive, of which he was a Charter Member. His body has been cremated and interment will be at a later date.

Walter Raymond Spitznagel was born in Bloomfield Township, Polk County, August 6, 1909 to Eugene and Elizabeth (Graham) Spitznagel. A life-long resident of Des Moines' south side, he often accompanied his father delivering milk from the family dairy farm on County Line Road to Ft. Des Moines during WW I. He attended township schools through eighth grade and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1928. He then was employed by the Des Moines Water Company.

In 1936, Judd married Ruth Wilson and to this union one son, Jimmy was born. Judd enlisted in the Army Air Force, during WW II and was proud of his service with the 13th Combat Cargo Squadron 90th Group India, Burma, China. He was fond of telling of his visits to the Taj Mahal in India. After his honorable discharge, he resumed his work with the Water Company, retiring in 1973 after 45 years of service. He was active in the Isaac Walton League, the Croatian Club, the Masonic Home Lodge 370 and the China-Burma-India Veterans Association.

Judd was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son, his brother Frank and his brother-in-law Billie Wilson. He is survived by his beloved neighbors: Norma and Joe Buehlmann and their children, Joey, Jessie and Jennifer on the east and Coila VandeLune on the west, all of whom treated him like family; his buddy, Blackie Kalinski of Des Moines; cousins, Ruth Hughes and Joyce Brown of West Des Moines, Jessie Roush of Waukee, Rolland Graham and Helen Hughes of Des Moines, Junior Hanen of Jefferson, Lavonne Brown of Urbandale, Gladys Robinson of Washington and Betty Titchenal of California, and many long-time friends.

Family and friends wish to acknowledge and thank the staff at the Veterans Hospital, Fleur Heights Care Center and Hospice of Central Iowa for their loving care of Judd.

Memorial contribution may be made in Judd's name to: Isaac Walton League, Lincoln High School, the Croatian Club, Hospice of Central Iowa or his church.
