Obituary

Wayne W. Novotny, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 of a heart ailment. He was surrounded by loved ones and caring staff at the Madrid Home, as well as the Suncrest Hospice Team.

Wayne, born on February 9, 1932, was raised in Clutier, Ia, one of two children born to William and Alice (Herejk) Novotny. Upon graduation from Clutier High School, he attended and graduated from AIB College of Business in Des Moines. Wayne also served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954, stationed in Ft. Lewis Washington, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. Following his discharge from the Army and while living in Des Moines, Wayne met his future wife, Maxine Lorraine (Thomas) Novotny. They were married on November 3, 1956 and to this union, 3 children were born - David, Rhonda and Lori. Wayne and Maxine moved to Madrid in 1961, constructing Madrid Lanes which they owned and operated for over 30 years before retiring. Wayne made countless friendships through his years in the bowling alley and was known for the Maid-Rites and his homemade tenderloins. He was also the clubhouse manager at Woodward Golf Club for a number of years. During retirement, Wayne was persuaded by many former customers to continue providing them with his locally “famous” tenderloins. A favorite past-time was playing bingo, and he never missed an opportunity to head to Boone or Meskwaki with Milo and Murtle, two of his best buddies.

Wayne is survived and lovingly remembered by his son, David (Deanna) Novotny of Madrid; two daughters, Rhonda (Rick) Geneser of Riverside and Lori (Adron) Smith of North Carolina; seven grandchildren, Matt (Terry) Geneser of Iowa City, Michael (Sheila) Geneser of North Liberty, Lucas Novotny of Omaha, Whitney (Austin) Dickinson of Mankato, MN, Nick Novotny, US Navy-stationed in Guam; Bailea and Kylie Waugh both of North Carolina; four great-grandaughters, Nelia and Alice Geneser of Iowa City, Ruth Geneser of North Liberty, Landry Dickinson of Mankato, MN, 2 great-grandsons, Lincoln Geneser of North Liberty and Joseph Geneser of Iowa City; one brother in law, Glen (Donna) Thomas of Pleasant Hill; two sisters in law, Gladys Snodgrass of Pleasant Hill and Peggy Thomas of Pleasant Hill; and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded into eternal life by his wife Maxine in 2014; his parents; brother Dallas Dean Novotny; and many sisters/brothers in law.

The family has respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, any memorial contributions be made to: Suncrest Home Health & Hospice; The Madrid Home, or the Wayne Novotny Memorial Fund to be designated later.
