Obituary

Wendell Eugene "Gene" Houston, 48, formerly of Dallas Center, passed from this life on Saturday, October 8, 2005 at the University Of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, from complications following a heart attack on September 21, 2005. A celebration to honor Gene's life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Dunn's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Interment will follow at Brethren Cemetery, east of Dallas Center, Iowa.

Gene was born on October 30, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa to Wendell M. and Marjorie L. (Cirksena) Houston. He was a graduate of the former Dallas Community High School in Dallas Center. Gene was employed as a food server for more than 25 years. For 22 of those years, he was formerly employed with the Red Lobster Restaurant, and then most recently, Gene was employed with the Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano both in West Des Moines. Cooking was one of his many specialties. Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Gene will always be remembered for not only his delicious meals he prepared, but also for all of his love and support he so graciously gave.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his parents, Wendell and Marjorie Houston of Dallas Center; two sisters, Kathi Koenig and her husband Jim of Des Moines and Karen Houston-Thill of Windsor Heights; one brother, Rick Houston and his wife Cheryl of Ottumwa; three step-daughters, Lisa Porter of Des Moines, Lori Sales and her husband Rich of West Des Moines and Kim Edwards of Altoona; seven step-grandchildren; ten nieces and nephews; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; a host of many friends; and his very special lovable dog, Christine.

Gene was preceded into eternal life by his life partner, Bill Edwards in June of 2005; his maternal and paternal grandparents; his aunt, Lovena Mabry Martino; and two cousins, Marshall Eugene Mabry and Sharon Houston McConnell.

Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, at Dunn's Funeral Home, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
