Obituary

Wendell Houston, 79, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines from complications of multiple myeloma. Memorial services will be held 10:30am Friday at Iles Funeral Homes-Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Burial of the cremated remains will be at Brethren Cemetery at a later date.

Wendell was born in Clear Springs, Missouri and moved to Iowa when he was 15 years old. He served in the US Navy on the destroyer, U.S.S. Willard Keith. Wendell married Marjorie Cirksena on May 8, 1949 in Perry, Iowa. He worked as a stock cutter at Firestone for 31 years. During his retirement Wendell drove a school bus for the Dallas Center-Grimes School District. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling with family and friends and attending family reunions.

Wendell was preceded in death by his parents, his children, Gene Houston and Karen Houston-Thill; and his sister Lovena Martino. He is survived by his wife Marjorie, his children, Kathi (Jim) Koenig of Des Moines and Rick (Cheryl) Houston of Ottumwa; 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, his sister, Helen Bush of Adel and brother, John Houston of Carthage, Missouri.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Thursday at Brandt Chapel in Dallas Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the John Stoddard Cancer Center.
