Obituary

Willard G. Fredregill, 93, died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at the Evangelical Free Church Home in Boone, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 11 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at Iles Grandview Park Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Des Moines.

Willard was born July 4, 1912 in Des Moines, Iowa, and lived most of his life in Des Moines. He loved sports and was a gifted athlete. Willard played amateur hockey for 28 years in the Des Moines City League, and was invited to the U.S. Olympic hockey tryouts in the late 1930’s.

He was a cement finisher, and worked for Neuman Construction Company in Des Moines during the 1930’s. He helped construct many landmark buildings throughout the city, including the Banker’s Trust Building. He also did extensive work at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Waukegon, Illinois.

Willard was a U.S. Navy veteran and served in the Pacific theater during World War II. He was a member of the Des Moines Post of the American Legion.

He also served on the City of Des Moines Fire Department for 30 years, and worked at Station numbers 1, 14 and 18. He retired from the department in 1973.

Willard loved the outdoor life and enjoyed over 30 years of retirement with his wife of 70 years, Ruth. They traveled extensively together, fishing and camping throughout the U.S. and Canada.

He is survived by daughters, June (Dale) Burge of Boone, IA, Jo Ann (Charles) Allen of Walker, MN and Janna (Donald) McKale of Clemson, SC; son, Will (Laurie) Fredregill of Lakeville, MN; eleven grandchildren and 16 (almost 18) great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2006 at the funeral home.
