Obituary

William E. Timmons, age 84 of Des Moines, Iowa, went to his Lord and Savior on January 9, 2009. Bill was born in Stanley, Wisconsin, on July 14, 1924, to William James and Rose (Covey) Timmons. He attended parochial and public schools, graduating from Stanley High School, Class of 1942. Bill graduated from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, with a B.A. degree in 1948, and from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. with a J.D. degree in 1950. He was admitted to the Iowa Bar in February, 1951.

College was interrupted by service in the military. Bill served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He served with the 444th Heavy Bombardment Squadron Group attached to the 20th Air Corps in the Mariana Islands. Bill married Mary Virginia McCann of Dubuque, Iowa, in 1948. He entered the general practice of law in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1951, and served as Assistant County Attorney of Dubuque County for 6 1/2 years.

Bill was appointed Iowa Commissioner of Insurance in 1959 by Governor Herschel C. Loveless and was reappointed by Governor Harold E. Hughes. Bill took an active part in the affairs of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, was elected Vice President of the NAIC in 1964, and was elected President of the organization for two terms. He was a member of the Iowa Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and was certified to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Bill joined the Patterson Law firm in January, 1967, where he remained until his retirement in 1995. He served as General Counsel of the Iowa Insurance Institute for many years.

Bill served on the boards of several insurance companies. He was named as a Regent of Loras College, and served from 1974 to 1988, and was then made a Regent Emeritus. He was inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 1998. He enjoyed reading, studying history and politics, and passed on his knowledge to his children and grandchildren. Bill was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Bill is survived by his children: Patty Timmons of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Michael Timmons of Dona Ana, New Mexico, Ann Timmons of Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Hoag (Dean) of Lincoln, Nebraska, Nancy Delperdang of Sioux City, Iowa, Laura (John) Opheim of Omaha, Nebraska, and his grandchildren: Moria Timmons (Peter Hughes), Brenden Hoag, Caitlin Hoag, Paige Delperdang, Grant Delperdang, Jacqueline Opheim, Claire Opheim and Eric Opheim.

Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 pm Monday, January 12, 2009 at Iles Funeral Homes, Westover Chapel, with a vigil service and rosary 6:30 pm Monday. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, January 13th, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery.

Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia McCann Timmons, his sister, Emily Ann Timmons and his son, William James Timmons.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church or Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa.
