Obituary

William F. "Bill" Mayer, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2014, with his two loving daughters by his side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 17, at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service time. Burial will follow at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Bill was born April 13, 1933, in Hutchinson, Minnesota, to Fred and Lorna Mayer. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1951. Following high school Bill went into the Army and served during the Korean Conflict where he enhanced his diesel mechanic and construction skills.

Bill married Clarice Lund, also of Hutchinson, on November 28, 1959. Soon after being married he began his career in construction and so did their travels to small towns in the Midwest with Bill as a construction superintendent. When their oldest daughter, Kelly, turned five-years-old they bought a home in Johnston, Iowa, so their daughters could attend school. Bill would drive from his home in Johnston to his work sites in Nebraska or Iowa during the week and be home on the weekends to see his family. Bill and Clarice owned and stayed in the Johnston home for over 45 years.

Bill was a talented artist drawing portraits, wildlife and cars. He had a passion for repairing, restoring and driving cars. In his younger years he was a well-known stock car driver around the Hutchinson area. His car was number 6. After retiring from stock car racing he still loved the sport and he and Clarice would take their daughters to car races at the Iowa State Fairgrounds and Boone. Bill and Clarice also traveled to several Daytona 500 races. In his later years if there was a Nascar race on you could be sure he was watching it on TV.

Keeping with his Minnesota roots, Bill learned to play the accordion and would play polka music when he was younger. Hunting, fishing, camping, and anything outdoors was what he loved from the time he was a small boy until his later years. He had wonderful stories of hunting and fishing with his friends and family when he was younger and enjoyed telling his daughters and grandchildren the stories when everyone got together at the cabin.

Bill is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughters, Kelly Jerome of Clive and Kim (Todd) Babich of West Des Moines; sister, Dianne (Roger) Roth of Maple Grove, MN; four grandchildren, Casey Jerome, Josh Jerome, Brie Babich and Drake Babich. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 50 years, Clarice Mayer; and brother, Robert Mayer.
