He married Joan (Fitzpatrick) Bolin in 1982. Their daughter, Megan, was born in November 1985. He moved his family to Des Moines, Iowa, in 1986 when he accepted the position of President of the Mercy Hospital Foundation, Mercy Hospital Medical Center. He retired in 1997.

Bill will be remembered for his love of family and the outdoors, including hunting and fishing. He had a sharp wit and was an excellent speaker. He brought scripture alive and directed workshops for lectors. After retirement he often traveled to Thailand to work with Fr. Joe Meier and Fr. Mike Shea to raise money for the Mercy Center Orphanage and Aids Hospice. After the 2004 Tsunami, Bill returned to help peasant villages rebuild.
